I often play a game on my phone called Words with Friends (it’s almost the same as scrabble). I find it really relaxing and I
enjoy the challenge with friends.
The other day, an opponent played the word gavel. This is not a word I hear very
often, so it made me think. I thought about how the gavel is a very significant
tool in a courtroom.
A judge holds the gavel and slams it down
on his bench signifying closure or finality in a court case. When the gavel
sounds all other sounds cease. There is nothing left to be argued, defended or
proven!
That little wooden hammer, as it were, in
the hand of the right person, represents a remarkable amount of authority and
closure!
This got me thinking about God’s word. It’s
just like a gavel. Once it was spoken it became the final authority and sound
ever needed to be heard by man. The sound that came forth from God’s mouth and
became the living breathing word of God was a banging gavel, bringing closure!
So many times in my life I have argued back
and forth with the Lord…tried to win my case, fight for my cause and defend my
rights. Other times I have listened to
lies. I have believed things that I have been charged with, and fallen victim
to false accusations and believed all of the enemies charges against me!!
Indeed, at times, there was enough “beyond
a shadow of a doubt” proof, and my accuser could have presented enough evidence
to condemn and convict me, but none of it really mattered. All that mattered was
the final word! The last statement issued by the judge of my life. His verdict silences all others. His authority
supersedes every accusation and offense my enemy can conjure up!
His word screams that I am forgiven! His
word echoes over and over…”WHOM THE SON SETS FREE IS FREE INDEED!” And His strong
grasp on the falling gavel obliterates EVERY SINGLE sin!
Once the gavel slams the bench, and the
final authority has rung out, all accusers lose! ALL enemies are scattered and
the chains that bind are broken! HALLELUJAH!
Listen to that sound? Can you hear it? The
gavel has fallen. The word of God has gone forth and HE has had the last word!
COURT DISMISSED!
